Old Space, New Space

In 1992, the founders started out in a spare office of a friend. Located on Second Avenue in the SOMA[South Of Market Area] district in San Francisco, now known as `Multimedia Gulch', Wired seemed to fit into the building and the neighborhood. The old brick building had a certain charm to it, and Wired grew into the structure. After the struggling start-up published its first issue and received some financing, Wired moved out of the loaned office and up to the third floor. At first, they only used a corner of the warehouse floor, but over the next twenty months, Wired grew so fast that people seemed to be sitting on each other's laps.

The `Grotto' was the corner of the office where Wired's online activities started. When a business plan for HotWired was created in April 1994, Jonathan and Andrew started looking for a new space to relocate the Grotto.

The search parameters were:

1. the space should be close to Wired
2. the space should allow for expansion
3. the space should accommodate extensive networking cables.
The fourth floor of a large factory building one block away met all of the above criteria. So, what was then called "Wired on the World Wide Web" moved out of the Grotto and into its 'new space'. Like a baby leaving the womb, HotWired established its residence on 510 3rd Street.

The rest of Wired moved into 520 3rd Street soon thereafter. Wired employees had actually discovered the space when they threw their one year anniversary party there. Wired moved in after HotWired because there were structural changes being built into the 18,000 square foot space to accommodate the growing complexity. HotWired left its 4000 square foot space open, which allowed them to move in earlier. The move to the new space was a monumental undertaking, and everyone who was working in the old space always mentions the move as a major milestone.

The move represented the birth of Hotwired, which was the first test of Wired's 'cellular' organizational structure.

As Wired and HotWired are approaching almost a full year in the 'new space', they both are constrained again. In both units, people are talking about moving again.
